Chinese Key words and Phrases
- Chinese people have family names (mostly one syllable) and given names (one or two syllables). Family name is placed first.
- In official documents Chinese family names are mostly written in all caps format.
- Members of the same family will be with different family names. Women always keep their maiden name after marriage.
- A lot of Chinese people prefer to use their “English” given name, when travel abroad. Be prepared they can introduce themselves by Chinese family name and “English” given name, which doesn’t match the name in their passport.
- When communicate with Chinese people you have to address them by title and family name (for ex. Professor Wang, Director Liu, Nurse Hu etc.).
- If you don’t know their title, you can address them by Mr., Mrs. or Miss.
